Description

The bright orange labels are used to warn airline personnel before loading dangerous cargo onto a PASSENGER AIRCRAFT due to the danger this may pose to the safety of the aircraft and its passengers. The CAO label is required for all shipments of dangerous goods shipped by cargo aircraft.

The label must be rectangular and have a minimum size of 110 x 120 mm. The printed text and images should be in black on an orange background (Pantone 151), and the label must be in exact compliance with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Our labels have an enlarged size of 115 x 125 mm and are printed on intense fluorescent paper to ensure very good print visibility.

WHEN SHOULD YOU (AND SHOULDN’T) USE THE CAO LABEL?

There are very specific cases where the label should and should not be used, and shippers using the label need to be aware of the list of dangerous goods in the IATA DGR, section 4.2.

List 4.2 contains important information for the preparation of air freight shipments: The 4 most important columns are:

Column I: Packing instructions for passenger and cargo air consignments Column J: Quantity limit per parcel for passenger and cargo air consignments Column K: Packing instructions for consignments relating exclusively to cargo aircraft Column L: Quantity limit per piece only for cargo aircraft

WHEN TO USE THE CAO LABEL:

Prohibited on passenger aircraft: The CAO label must be used if the shipment is prohibited on the passenger aircraft. The CAO label must be used if the word “Prohibited” appears in columns I and J, but dangerous goods can be sent by CAO in accordance with columns K and L.

If the packaging instructions and quantity limits differ: The packaging instructions and quantity limits for passenger and cargo aircraft can be found accordingly in columns I and J for fully regulated shipments in the list of dangerous goods of IATA DGR 4.2. If your package exceeds the limit in column J, you must use the packaging instructions in column K for CAO (and stay below the quantity limit in column L). In this case, you need to use the CAO label.

If you have the same packing instruction but different quantity limits: If PI is the same, but the maximum net quantities per package are different for passenger (columns I and J) and cargo aircraft (columns K and L). For some UN numbers, it may happen that PI is the same in columns I and K, but the difference refers only to the maximum net quantities per piece in columns J and L. In this case, if the net quantity of the shipment in column J is higher, the transport will be carried out as “Cargo Aircraft Only” and the CAO label must be used.

WHEN NOT TO USE THE CAO LABEL:

If the package can be transported on the passenger plane: If the package can be transported on the passenger plane, the shipper must not use a CAO label.

For mixed consignments of passenger and cargo air consignments: If the consignment is prepared in such a way that it can be transported in passenger air transport in accordance with the packaging instructions for limited quantities and quantity limits in columns G and H or the fully regulated packaging instructions and quantity limits in columns I and J and the consignment note says “Cargo aircraft only” because there are other packages in the consignment, the CAO label shall not be used on consignments prepared for passenger air transport.

If you have the same packaging instruction but no quantity limit: If the packaging instructions are the same in columns I and K, but “no limit” is stated in columns J and L, you should be careful whether you should use the CAO label.
